Q: I use a ShoreTel 265 phone at work and I need to find out if the AWH-55 Wireless Headset will work with this phone. I would like to be able to answer the phone from the headset without the use of a handset lifter so please let me know what model would work with my phone.

A: Here is what is recommended for the ShoreTel IP 265 Telephone: Instead of the AWH-55, you want to use the Plantronics CS55 ($225.00). Physically, it looks similar to the AWH-55 but it works on a different frequency (1.9 GHz) that will not interfere with your wireless Internet connections in the office and it has up to 10 hours of talk time. To connect it to your phone without having to use a handset lifter, you will need the RD-1 adapter cable (#78887-01, $24.95) which allows for remote call answer/end.

In this application you will have a corded headset over-your-ear or in-your-ear that has a cord hanging down and ending with a mini plug, also called a 2.5mm jack, that plugs into your cellular phone. This is a great way to be hands free while driving and also making it easier to communicate with your caller. Another advantage of using a corded headset with your cellular phone is that a corded headset doesn’t require charging so you can use it whenever you need it and never worry about the battery not being charged as with many wireless headsets. Most corded headsets for your cellular phone will have a speaker volume adjustment and a mute button. A microphone volume adjustment is rarely available. Also, the speaker volume adjustment is only adjusting what your phone provides. The headset doesn’t increase volume or amplify it.

With a corded headset at home you now have a great way to talk with friends and family for extended periods of time while relieving your neck and shoulders from cradling the handset. You will need to decide between two different configurations. First, there is a corded headset with a dialing pad base unit. This is a stand alone single-line (there is a 2-line version available as well) telephone. It rings and has many of the standard features of a basic telephone. The second configuration is to have a corded headset with an amplifier that plugs into a standard telephone. This allows you to use your phone the same way, except now you will use a headset instead of holding the handset. You plug the amplifier into your handset port and typically lift your handset off to the side of your phone when you answer or start to dial. Once the call is complete, you hang-up the handset. This works well on most single-line and multi-line corded phones because you have the ability to use all of your phones functions the same way. Your only using a corded headset instead of your handset.
